About
Tlingit & Haida
The Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (Tlingit & Haida) is a tribal government representing over 37,000 Tlingit and Haida Indians worldwide. We are a sovereign entity and have a government-to-government relationship with the United States.
Tlingit & Haida represents communities across southeast Alaska, a region spanning 35,138 square miles. This territory stretches 525 miles from north to south and 120 miles wide, bordered by Canada’s Yukon Territory and British Columbia. Known for its rugged mountains, scattered islands, and an expansive 11,000-mile coastline, this area is home to the Tongass National Forest—the largest temperate rainforest in the world, encompassing 16 million acres of breathtaking natural beauty.

Tidal Network
In 2022 Tlingit & Haida was awarded nearly $50M for broadband infrastructure development projects. Tlingit & Haida was one of four Alaska tribal entities awarded funding for broadband under the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration. As a result, Tidal Network was established.
Tidal Network is the broadband service program within Tlingit & Haida and works to ensure Southeast Alaska communities have reliable internet connectivity. Tidal Network partner communities include Wrangell, Sitka, Hoonah, Petersburg and more.
Tribal Sovereignty & Broadband
Tlingit & Haida’s Tidal Network is dedicated to bridging the digital divide in Southeast Alaska by bringing broadband access to communities. Beyond connectivity, we work to uphold tribal sovereignty over the 2.5 GHz spectrum and prioritize digital equity to empower Alaska Native communities to thrive in the digital age and stay connected to vital opportunities.
“We’re not just providing the internet; we’re ensuring communities have the tools they need for success.”
Chris Cropley, Director of Tidal Network
Bridging the Divide
Many areas still lack broadband, and this digital inequality threatens to widen socioeconomic gaps. Access to broadband is about more than staying connected—it’s a key resource for community stability and development. The importance of universal access to broadband and the critical role organizations like ours play cannot be overstated. We’re not just providing internet; we’re ensuring communities have the tools they need for success.
“Access to broadband services enables our tribal citizens to both grow and remain in their communities.”

Ongoing Commitment
Tidal Network is committed to building the infrastructure and cultivating partnerships to secure reliable broadband across Southeast Alaska. We collaborate with other service providers and stakeholders to enhance regional connectivity so that no community is left behind. Together, we can bridge the digital divide and empower every corner of our region.
